Thursday, 18th September - Idaho Falls to Salt Lake City (231 miles)

The last major leg of our road trip (we have covered a total of just over 2,000 miles in the past 13 days since we picked up the car) and to our final stop - 2 nights in Salt Lake City. A 231 mile journey pretty much due south down I15, out of Idaho and over the state line into Utah:



Not such a spectacular or scenic drive as some we have had on this holiday as we effectively followed the road in the valley between two mountain ranges:



Dinner tonight in the restaurant, Ramblin' Roads, adjacent to our Holiday Inn Express ..... could be meatloaf and brown gravy (we are in the USA after all) 😋 Deep fried Oreo and vanilla ice cream for dessert ....

Our day started with a stroll up 17th Street into the Lower Downtown, LoDo, area and to Union Station, now a hospitality hub as well as a railway station (and I have forgotten, if I ever knew, how to rotate pictures in the blog!): On then to the Coors Field baseball stadium: Tickets purchased for tomorrow evening's game while we were there :0) After a refreshing lunchtime stop (peaches 'n' cream milkshakes) we embarked on a two hour minibus tour of the highlights of Denver in the capable hands of our entertaining and informative driver, Jared: After the bus tour we walked back down 16th Street to the wonderful Museum of Illusions where we spent a fun hour and a half having our minds and perceptions challenged: Supper in the evening at Giordano's Italian restaurant on California Street rounded the day off perfectly.

Wednesday, 10th September - Rapid City (115 miles)

We went west out of Rapid City today to one of the most recognisable monuments in the USA, Mount Rushmore: From left to right: Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, Lincoln. We watched a film presentation about the construction of the Monument and spent quite some time in the excellent visitors' centre. Poignantly it was constructed on a mountain considered sacred by the native American Indian's ..... Having seen a buffalo/bison yesterday we ate it for lunch today in a bison chilie: We then moved on to the Crazy Horse Monument (construction started in the 1940s and is unlikely to be fully completed until the 2040s!). By way of scale, the top of Lincoln's head at Mount Rushmore would align with the eye of Crazy Horse ie the latter is approximately half as big again. Thursday, 4th September - Heathrow to Denver via Atlanta

Having enjoyed the morning in the complimentary Lounge 1 at Heathrow, (thank you Complete North America) we departed just after 1pm on our Delta flight (9 hours) to Atlanta. Our flight was diverted by air traffic control because of storm activity on the US east coast and we arrived late in Atlanta - would we make our connecting flight (we had an hour!)? We passed through customs (our first point of entry into the USA), baggage reclaim and subsequent drop-off and a train ride to the domestic terminal in under 40 minutes - the Atlanta airport hub is an absolute model of efficiency based on our experience. And so on to Denver on a 3 hour internal Delta flight arriving at just after 8pm local time (4am UK time). We took a taxi to our hotel, the Magnolia, on 17th Street, grabbed coffee and cookies and headed to a much needed bed. Zzzzzzzzzzzzz
